Puerto Galera is among the top diving destinations in the Philippines, and designated a UNESCO Man and Biosphere Reserve in 1973, this part of Oriental Mindoro is well known amongst tourists and divers for it’s numerous secluded beaches and dive sites. The warm and clear waters that surround Puerto Galera are home to more than three thousand species of fish and marine animals .

The marine environment has benefited greatly as the influx of tourist dollars has diverted the local economy away from fishing as the local fisherman receive a greater income servicing divers and other tourists. Behind the beaches sit the mysterious and largely unexplored mountain rages of central Mindoro, which are inhabited by eight Mangyan tribes, the largest of which are the Iraya. Even today, many members of these tribes have almost completely avoided any contact with the outside world.
